Prospective Teachers

My research focuses on understanding prospective early childhood and elementary teachers' conceptions of diversity, equity, and justice, and how teacher educators can challenge and disrupt their deficit notions of children communities and broaden their views of child-centered, progressive, and justice-oriented approaches to teaching.

Practicing Teachers

I focus on understanding and unpacking equity and justice as part of mathematical systems. An important dimension to this work includes examining issues of privilege and oppression as teacher educators and research team members engage in this work, as well as how practicing mathematics teachers understand how these issues play out in their practice.

In Elementary Classrooms

I examine how elementary mathematics teachers adapt, design, and enact tasks that connect mathematics to real-world issues. With funding from the National Science Foundation, our team is developing a collection of "records of practice" from data collected from our work in elementary classrooms. In the future we will study the use of these in teacher preparation and professional development settings.
